Are there any three words in the English language that are more dreaded than, “Mom, I’m bored?”

Relax, we’ve got you covered.

Hidden Gems: Lesser-Known Miami-Dade Public Library Programs for Kids and Families

The Miami-Dade Public Library System offers a treasure trove of programs and services for kids and families. While many people know about the classic storytimes and summer reading challenges, the library offers many lesser-known gems. Whether you’re seeking educational activities, creative workshops, or fun family events, there’s something for everyone at your local Miami library. Here’s a list of some of the most interesting and possibly lesser-known programs you and your kids can explore:

1. STEAM Workshops for Kids

While science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) education is often a focus in schools, the Miami-Dade Public Library offers a series of fun and interactive STEAM workshops designed to engage kids outside the classroom. From hands-on activities like building simple machines to learning coding through games, these workshops help develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. The best part? Many of these programs are completely free!

2. StoryWalk®

The library’s StoryWalk® program is a fantastic way to get kids outside and reading at the same time. Available at select libraries and local parks, a StoryWalk® features pages from a children’s book posted along a walking path. As you stroll, you can stop and read the story together, making it a perfect family activity that combines exercise with the joy of reading.

3. Read to a Dog Program

For kids who may be hesitant about reading aloud, the “Read to a Dog” program is a wonderful way to build confidence. In this program, children are invited to read books to trained therapy dogs in a non-judgmental, relaxed environment. Dogs make great listeners, and this program has been shown to help improve kids’ reading fluency and comfort level with public speaking. Plus, the dogs are super cute and friendly (yes, I speak from experience).

4. YOUmake Miami

While younger kids benefit from educational activities and storytimes, older children and teens can enjoy programs like YOUmake Miami which focuses on technology education. In these workshops, teens can get hands-on experience with 3D printing, coding, virtual reality, video production, and other cutting-edge tech. It’s a great way to spark an interest in future career paths and introduce kids to the basics of tech they may not learn in school.

5. Crafty Kids

If your child is a budding artist, the library’s arts & crafts workshops are a must-try. These free, hands-on sessions allow kids to experiment with a variety of artistic mediums, including drawing, painting, and sculpture. It’s a great way to encourage self-expression, enhance fine motor skills, and inspire creativity. Plus, many of these workshops are held at the library’s youth-friendly locations, making it easy for families to participate.

6. Family Movie Nights

Did you know that the Miami-Dade Public Library hosts free Family Movie Nights throughout the year? These events allow families to watch popular movies together in a relaxed setting. Not only is it a great way to spend an evening as a family, but these movie nights also often include themed activities and discussions afterward, making them an educational and interactive experience.

7. Homework Help and After-School Tutoring

Many libraries offer free tutoring services or homework help sessions, especially during the school year. Whether your child is struggling with math, science, or reading, the library can provide a quiet, supportive environment for them to focus and receive extra assistance. Volunteers and tutors are often available to help guide children through challenging assignments, making the library a go-to resource for academic support.

8. Kids & Book Clubs

For kids who love to read and discuss stories, the library’s Kids’ Book Clubs are a fantastic way to engage with literature beyond the classroom. These clubs are often divided by age group, allowing children to read and discuss books with their peers. Not only does this foster a love for reading, but it also helps improve critical thinking and social skills as kids learn to articulate their thoughts and opinions in a group setting.

9. Board Game Clubs

Love board games and want to find like-minded families to challenge? Hate board games and desperate to pawn (see what I did there?) your kid off on a random opponent before you start eating the checkers in frustration? Your local branch has you covered with an extensive array of games offered and levels of competition.

10. Cultural Programs and Heritage Month Celebrations

Miami is a melting pot of cultures, and the library takes full advantage of this diversity through its cultural programs. From learning about Caribbean heritage during Caribbean American Heritage Month to celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with storytelling and
crafts, the library hosts special programs that expose kids to different cultures and histories. These events are perfect for broadening children’s perspectives and helping them understand the world around them.

11. Museum Pass Program

Wait a minute, isn’t this supposed to be a list about the library?!? In fact, the library is just as happy to let you borrow free passes to local museums and historic sites throughout Miami. With extensive options including Zoo Miami, Vizcaya, and the Frost Science Museum, there’s something for every family. Plus, the passes are good for seven days after checkout.

12. Junior Environmental Rangers Club

If you have a little nature enthusiast at home, they can learn about the ecosystems found in South Florida’s Everglades National Park, Big Cypress Preserve, and Biscayne National Park. What’s more, participants will have the opportunity to earn a park badge.

Oh, and for the know-it-alls who are already on top of these programs and want the next hot thing? Come help us build it! The Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library does
more than advocate for the library. We also help develop and fund a wealth of library programs and run many of the volunteer opportunities (for both you and your kids!). If you have an idea or an urge to help improve the best library system in the country, come check us out.
