Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Heart Institute: Care for Tiny Hearts

The Heart Institute at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital: Caring for the Littlest Hearts

As moms, our hearts are forever tied to our children. We feel their joy deeply and we feel their pain even more. So when something threatens their health, especially something as vital as their heart, it’s almost impossible not to feel overwhelmed.

February is Heart Health Month, and while much of the conversation centers around adult heart care, it’s just as important to pause and remember the tiniest hearts.

For Jessica and Juan Gabriel, that reality came sooner than they ever imagined.

A Diagnosis No Parent Is Prepared For

Before Gabriel was even born, his parents learned he had a severe congenital heart defect. The diagnosis included truncus arteriosus, an interrupted aortic arch, and pulmonary stenosis which are complex conditions that would require immediate, expert care at birth.

Like so many parents facing an unexpected medical diagnosis, Jessica and Juan Gabriel did what moms and dads do best: they researched, asked questions, sought second opinions, and connected with other families who had walked this road before them. They were searching for clarity, confidence, and most of all, hope.

That search led them to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. With more than 40 pediatric subspecialities, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is designed to care for children with even the most complex medical needs. For families like the Gabriels who are facing the unimaginable news of a heart defect diagnosis, the Heart Institute stands as a trusted place of expertise, compassion, and hope for children of all ages.

From the moment they met Dr. David Kalfa, Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at Nicklaus Children’s and Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at Florida International University College of Medicine, they felt something shift. They knew they were in the hands of world class care. Instead of facing the unknown alone, they felt supported by a team of doctors, nurses, and staff who truly understood their son’s condition.

World-Class Care When It Matters Most

Shortly after birth, Gabriel underwent an extremely complex neonatal heart repair. The surgery included reconstruction of his aortic arch, repair of the truncus arteriosus, and correction of his narrowed pulmonary artery, a STAT5-level procedure, reserved for the most intricate and high-risk neonatal heart surgeries.

Gabriel’s outcome was nothing short of remarkable.

He came out of surgery with excellent heart function and a closed chest, a rare achievement given the complexity of the procedure.

For his parents, this wasn’t just medical success, it was the gift of peace.

When the Future Doesn’t Have to Feel Scary

No parent imagines their child’s first days of life being spent in an operating room. But stories like Gabriel’s are a powerful reminder that a diagnosis doesn’t define a future, especially when families have access to world-class pediatric care.
