In Miami, there is not a shortage of great private schools, but after a few school tours, everything can start to sound the same. Small classes, caring teachers, and strong academics, which we love! But how do you make a decision?! The details are what is important.
If you’re comparing private schools in Miami, here are eight questions worth asking at every school on your list. Remember, this involves your child’s future so ask all the questions! Keep reading to see why Cushman might be the perfect fit for your child!
1. What grade span and long-term pathway does the school offer?
Some private schools only offer elementary or up to middle school, so be sure to check which grades are offered, and how many students stay through graduation! Another great question is to see how/when students transition between each “school” or division (middle school to high school).
2. How does the school personalize learning and support individualized needs?
We know that every child has been created differently and learns differently than the child next to them. Because of this, it is important to ask how the school handles these differences. If a school emphasizes “individualized learning,” ask what that looks like practically. How do teachers adjust instruction when a student needs more challenging instruction or “additional support?”
3. What are the class sizes and teacher-support model?
Be sure to clarify what the class size maximum and the average class size is. Ask if there are any assistant teachers or additional teachers in the classroom!
4. How challenging and flexible is the academic program?
Check and see if there is an honors program, if there are AP classes offered, and how many options are available.
5. What enrichment is available in arts, athletics and technology?
Even though a long list of clubs looks impressive, that doesn’t mean it’s open for your child. Ask what’s open to your child’s grade and whether beginners can join the clubs you’re interested in.
6. What college preparatory and counseling resources are available?
Great college counseling starts long before applications. Ask when students first meet a counselor, how many students each counselor supports and what recent outcomes look like..
7. What is the day-to-day experience like for families?
Ask about the admissions timeline, commute, after-school programs and communication with families. And pay attention during your visit. Do students seem comfortable? Do teachers know their students? Can you picture your child there?
