Forget the School Supplies: Here’s What Moms Really Need

Walk into any store this time of year and you’ll catch some version of the same scene. Carts overflowing with folders and boxes of crayons. Kids lobbying hard for the backpack they absolutely need. And somewhere in the middle of it all, a mom scrolling through a school supply list on her phone, trying to remember if the teacher wanted wide-ruled or college-ruled.

August has its own rhythm.

Lunchboxes come out of storage. Calendars start filling up again. Bedtimes slowly inch earlier. Everyone is getting ready for a new school year. And with it comes a quiet promise.

This year will be different.

We’ll get out the door without yelling. Mornings won’t feel so rushed. We won’t be scrambling to find missing shoes five minutes before the bus comes.

It’s a hopeful thought. But it also comes with a lot of pressure. Because while the kids are adjusting to new teachers and new routines, so are the parents, who are juggling pickup schedules, permission slips, doctor’s appointments, birthdays, and all the little details that somehow only live in one person’s head.

Most of that work goes unnoticed.

Nobody claps for the mom who remembered picture day, signed the field trip form, washed the soccer uniform, and still made it to work on time. That’s just… expected.

Until someone can’t find their shoes. And suddenly it looks like the shoes caused the meltdown. But anyone who’s ever carried a bag that’s a little too heavy knows it’s not the last thing you put in it that makes it hard to lift. It’s everything that’s already in there.

What if we gave moms a little of the grace we give our kids during a transition? What if we gave them permission to remember that change is messy and grown-ups need time to adjust, too?

Because in the end, the notebooks will still get filled, the homework will get done, the art projects will end up decorating the fridge, at least one school uniform will mysteriously disappear, and the sneakers will come home covered in dirt. That’s a given.

But the mom who’s zipping the backpack and checking the calendar one more time to make sure nothing is missed doesn’t need another box of pencils.

She needs a whole lot more grace for herself.

Each new school year comes with its own unique set of hopes and challenges. What from this post resonated the most with you? How will you give yourself grace in the hard moments?
