Family Vacations: Are We There Yet?

If you’re a Miami mom, chances are you’ve been brave enough to make the pilgrimage to Orlando at least once or twice.

And if you’ve ever promised your kids the chance to meet Mickey or have lunch with Cinderella, you’ve probably heard one question more times than you can count:

“Are we there yet?”

Man, woman, boy and girl in a car on the highway

Usually somewhere between merging onto the Turnpike and leaving Broward County… right around the time you realize that even after packing with the precision of a Swiss clock someone’s favorite teddy bear is still sitting on the bed at home or you left the blankie they need to fall asleep.

By the time you arrive, you’ve handed out snacks, made a bathroom stop (or three), settled about 10 sibling disagreements, and questioned whether this vacation is even worth all the trouble.

Family vacations are supposed to be a break from everyday life.

Instead, they often magnify it because vacations don’t create family dynamics, they reveal them. When routines disappear, so do many of the things that help everyone stay regulated. Bedtimes are later. Meals happen when they happen. Kids are overstimulated. Parents are stretched thin. Suddenly, the smallest hiccup can feel like the biggest obstacle.

The words family vacation written in the sand

It’s easy to blame the long lines, the missed nap, or the afternoon thunderstorm. But often, it’s not what happened that’s frustrating. It’s the gap between the vacation we pictured and the one we’re actually living. The pressure to make every moment magical, stick to the itinerary and make it all worthwhile.

Meanwhile, kids are finding joy in the moments that were never planned. The late-night swim at the hotel pool, the dance party while waiting for the shuttle, or the melted ice cream cone that somehow ended in laughter instead of tears.

Those are the moments they’ll remember.

Maybe somewhere along the way, Are we there yet?” became our question too. Always chasing the next thing. But perhaps getting there, wherever it may be, isn’t really the point? Perhaps the real magic behind every family vacation isn’t found in checking every box, but in being present for those unplanned moments.

Because years from now, it won’t be the perfect itinerary your family talks about around the dinner table. They will be sharing stories of those moments you never saw coming.

Family vacations really are full of unplanned moments. How have you seen magic happen and memories made in the midst of unexpected situations?
