Rainy Day Summer in Miami: The Backup List

School’s out, WOOOO!!!!

Summer in Miami sounds dreamy in theory… pool days, sunscreen-covered bambinos, late sunsets, smoothie runs, and everyone living their best tropical life. Until the rain hits. Until the pool needs to be cleaned. Until the sibling rivalry is at all-time high.

And if you’ve lived here long enough, you already know: summer rain in Miami isn’t just “a quick drizzle.” It’s full-blown monsoon energy by 2:47 PM with clear sunny skies by 5pm.

As a mom, I’ve learned that summer survival here is less about having the perfect plan and more about having a solid backup list. Because when the park plan gets canceled, everyone’s overstimulated, the house is somehow already destroyed by 10 AM, and your kids are looking at you like you’re the cruise director of the universe… and unless you have your kiddos booked for camps all summer, I have some ideas.

Not Pinterest-perfect options. Real ones.

Some rainy-day favorites in our house:

Rotating “special” toys

I hide a few random activities and pull them out only on rainy days. Magna-Tiles suddenly become magical again when they disappear for two weeks. Overflow of birthday or Christmas gifts get tucked away and I pull them out for days like this.

Movie afternoon… without guilt

Sometimes the vibe is survival. Popcorn, blankets, dim lighting, and a movie in the middle of the day? Honestly feels kind of cozy.

Baking something easy

I LOVE BAKING FROM SCRATCH… but prefer to do so alone, haha–please don’t judge! With the kids I lean more towards boxed brownies, muffins, cookies… whatever creates a moment and kills an hour.

Indoor energy burners

Dance parties. Balloon volleyball. Obstacle courses made from couch cushions I’ll regret later.

Library runs

SOOOOOOO Underrated. Free. Cold AC. New books. Computer labs. Where my library kids at???

And truthfully? Some of my favorite summer memories with my kids haven’t happened during the big exciting plans. They happened in the slowness. In the unexpected pauses. In the rainy afternoons where everyone was forced to stay home together.

Motherhood constantly reminds me that magic usually lives in the ordinary.

Even if the ordinary includes wet towels on the floor, snack requests every seven minutes, and somebody having a meltdown. I encourage you to grab a sheet of paper (kicking it old school lol), grab a marker and sit down with your littles to create a REAL BUCKET LIST – budget friendly and realistic. It doesn’t take much to get that magic from childhood.

Keep calm and summer on mamas.
