When we hear “social skills,” it can feel like we need to add one more thing to our already full lives.
But as a mom and speech therapist, I see it differently—this is really about practical life skills, and they’re built right into what we’re already doing. I try to incorporate “challenges” in our day to day and normalize something that for some can feel quite the opposite!
It’s the grocery store—letting your child ask for something instead of you jumping in. “Where is the restroom?” “What aisle do you have cereal?” etc.
It’s at restaurants—having them order their own meal, make eye contact, say thank you. No kids’ menu? No problem! Ask the waiter what options he/she can have as a child.
It’s at a clothing store or farmers market where you make the first greeting and say “good morning.”
It’s those small, real moments—speaking up when they need help that matter most.
Building Communication Skills
These aren’t big, structured lessons. They’re quick, everyday opportunities that build confidence, independence, and communication over time. Some people may think these are basic and easy skills to master, but I beg to differ! In a world where a screen can be capable of so many things, we need to teach our children how to be capable face-to-face. Because at the end of the day–the essence of human life is communication! This is the basis of community and what we have right here in our very own Miami Mom Collective community.
And yes, it might take a little longer in the moment. It might feel a little awkward at first. That’s okay—that’s part of it. We’re not aiming for perfect. We’re helping our kids feel capable in the real world.
This spring, boosting your child’s social skills is not about doing more. It’s just about letting them try a little more.
